You could also…
RUN AN OWNER’S RAFFLE WITH YOUR RACE NIGHT
You will need to bring three or four prizes of your choice - remember the bigger the prize the more tempting the tickets!!!
- After selling all your tickets, make the raffle draw before the last race. Draw eight tickets.
- The owner of each ticket selects one of the eight horses in the race.
- Once the result is known the prizes are allocated to the owners of the first three or four past the post.
USEFUL TIPS FOR ORGANISERS…
- A float of at least £50 in £1 and 50p coins.
- As a rough guide, allow for one tote seller for every 40 people.
- At least 50% of what you hope to raise should be gathered before the event in sponsorship - however do not try to do it all yourself - delegate!!!
PUBLICANS!!
For a really successful race night we advise you to get a local sports club involved who can take advantage of the service by finding sponsors and selling horses for their club. This will most certainly guarantee a good attendance on the night!
CHARITIES!!
Ask your local publican to help sponsor the evening by holding the night in the pub. They rarely refuse the opportunity to fill their pub with thirsty punters!

How legal is a race night?
The Lotteries and Amusement Act, 1976 define a Race Night as a lottery. The Rothschild Commission report on gaming and lotteries describes filmed horse racing as a form of lottery involving no skill or choice. Racing films are a simple and exciting way of establishing the winning ticket at random, so it is a game of chance with no skill involved.
There are, of course ways in which your race night could be considered illegal - holding the event open to the general public for example or advertising it in the local paper or outside club premises. To be safe, below is the relevant section of the Lottery and Amusement Act 1976 under which race nights are usually run. Please take a moment to read it:
Section 15, ‘Amusements with Prizes’ Section 15 is generally used when events are run in public places using ‘fun money’ with prizes. In this case you should ensure that:
1. The lottery is not the only substantial inducement for the people to attend; meaning the Race Night must be combined and advertised with another genuine attraction such as a Disco, Dinner-Dance, Quiz Night or even a ‘Social’.
2. All the proceeds of the entertainment, after expenses, must be devoted to purposes other than private gain.
